About

I am a senior fellow in economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the editor of AEI Economic Perspectives, and an affiliate of AEI's Center on Opportunity and Social Mobility. I am also an affiliate of Harvard's Center for American Political Studies and a fellow at the IE School of Politics, Economics, and Global Affairs. I have been a visiting lecturer of economics at Harvard University a number of times, most recently in the fall of 2025, and was a Campbell Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution in May 2022.

My research has been published in leading academic and professional journals, including the Journal of Monetary Economics, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, and The Review of Economics and Statistics. I am the editor, with Michael R. I comment frequently on economics, politics, and popular culture for general audiences. My writing has been featured in The Bulwark, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, USA Today, and The Washington Post, among other outlets. My broadcast appearances include CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, Telemundo, and Univision.

I received a PhD and an AM in economics from Harvard University. I also hold degrees from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, University of London, and Utrecht University.

I serve as a director of the Netherland-America Foundation and as a member of its executive committee. I welcome media inquiries in English, Spanish, and Dutch.
